Derived from the Greek word <code>\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03b7\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/code>, meaning \u201ca scarecrow, terror.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>I took more liberty with this word than usual; to the modern mind, &#8220;-tron&#8221; perhaps inescapably suggests machines.  While any machine that creates fear in onlookers may be called a phobetron, the quintessential phobetron was created intentionally to cause fear.  It may accomplish other things \u2014 it may in fact be quite functional and productive \u2014 but it was designed with the inspiration of fear firmly in mind.
